The philosophy of the Sport, Health and Exercise Science academic team has always been to teach and promote their discipline as an academic subject. Central to this is the emphasis on the inter/multi-disciplinary study of exercise and nutrition as it relates to sport, health and human performance.

The overarching aim of the Division can be summarised by the following statement:

To provide students with a challenging, exciting and first-class education in Sport, Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science that is underpinned by internationally recognised research and delivered in an environment that is modern, vibrant, friendly and exceptionally well resourced.

The programmes of study within the Division of Sport, Health and Exercise Science are underpinned by traditional and important academic subjects such as human anatomy, physiology and nutrition. In addition some academic courses in Sport, Health and Exercise Science also provide students with a range of opportunities for those wishing to pursue a career in coaching and performance in a chosen sport or sport in general. For more information visit our Coaching web pages .

Throughout all of the programmes there is also a strong applied theme and students are encouraged to develop a range of practical skills at many points throughout the Awards. In line with Quality Assurance Agency statements on the typical content of academic programmes of study in the area of ‘sport’, the Awards focus on:

  • Human responses and adaptations to sport, exercise and nutrition
  • The performance of sport and exercise and its enhancement, monitoring and analysis
  • The policy, planning, management and delivery of sport.
